What Is an LED Wall and What Is It Used For?

What is an LED wall?

An LED wall is a large digital display built from individual LED panels joined together to create one seamless screen.

Unlike a television or projector, there is no fixed screen size. The modular panels can be combined to create anything from a relatively small conference backdrop to a large-scale stage design stretching across an entire venue.

Each panel contains thousands of light-emitting diodes which produce the image directly. Because the LEDs generate their own light, the displays can be extremely bright and work particularly well in environments where a conventional projector may struggle.

The finished LED wall is connected to a video processor which receives content from presentation computers, media servers, cameras and other video sources before mapping it across the display.

This makes LED particularly flexible for live events, where the screen might need to switch between presentations, animated graphics, videos, sponsor content and live camera feeds throughout the day.

What are LED walls used for at events?

LED screens can be used almost anywhere a large, bright visual display is required.

You’ll regularly find them at:

  • Conferences

  • Awards ceremonies

  • Product launches

  • Exhibitions and trade shows

  • Brand activations

  • Festivals

  • Sporting events

  • Live performances

  • Outdoor events

For a conference, an LED wall might display presentation slides, speaker names and live camera feeds. At an awards ceremony, the same technology can become part of the stage design, displaying animated backgrounds, nominee graphics and winner announcements.

The modular format also means LED does not have to be one conventional rectangular screen. Separate screens, banners, columns and other configurations can all become part of the wider event design.

Why use an LED wall?

Bright, high-impact visuals

One of the biggest advantages of LED is brightness.

Because each pixel produces its own light, an LED wall can remain clear in relatively bright event spaces where projection can become washed out. This makes it particularly useful in venues with ambient lighting or where the screen forms an important part of the overall stage design.

Almost any size or shape

LED panels are modular, so the overall display can be designed around the event rather than choosing from a small number of fixed screen sizes.

A production might use one large central wall, multiple separate screens or LED elements incorporated into a larger scenic design.

The exact possibilities depend on the LED product being used, its panel dimensions and the structure available to support it.

Suitable for large audiences

LED can provide excellent visibility across large rooms.

Choosing the correct screen size and pixel pitch is important, particularly when audiences are viewing presentations containing smaller text or detailed graphics.

Pixel pitch refers to the distance between the LEDs on the display. A smaller pixel pitch generally provides a finer image when viewed up close, while larger-pitch products can be suitable where audiences are further away.

Live cameras and event content

LED walls can also form part of a complete video production system.

Live camera feeds can be displayed on the screens so people further back in the room can clearly see presenters, performers or award winners. Presentation slides, videos, graphics and other content can then be switched alongside those camera feeds throughout the event.

Indoor and outdoor LED screens

LED technology is available for both indoor and outdoor events, but the screens themselves are not necessarily interchangeable.

Outdoor LED products are designed to cope with weather and typically provide higher brightness levels to remain visible in daylight. They also need suitable structures, ballast and weather planning as part of the wider production design.

For indoor events, finer-pitch LED is often used because guests may be much closer to the screen.

The right choice depends on the venue, viewing distance, audience size, content and environment rather than simply choosing the highest-resolution screen available.

LED wall vs projection

LED isn’t automatically the right solution for every event.

Projection can still be extremely effective, particularly where there is good control of ambient light and a very large image is required without the physical weight or structure of an LED wall.

LED tends to become particularly attractive when brightness, visual impact, flexible sizing or integration into a stage design are priorities.

For some events, conventional display screens may be the most practical solution of all.

A good production design should therefore start with what the audience needs to see rather than deciding on the technology first.

Planning an LED wall for your event

Before specifying an LED wall, we normally consider factors including:

  • Audience size

  • Viewing distance

  • Screen dimensions

  • Pixel pitch

  • Venue access

  • Rigging or ground-support options

  • Available power

  • Stage design

  • Presentation content

  • Camera requirements

  • Indoor or outdoor use

These details determine much more than simply the physical size of the screen.

For example, a screen being used mainly for large-format video content may have very different requirements from one displaying spreadsheets, presentation slides or detailed text to an audience sitting only a few metres away.

Need an LED screen for an event?

At Stage Engage, LED screens form part of many of the conferences, awards ceremonies, brand activations and live events we produce.

We can provide the LED display itself or incorporate it into a wider technical production covering staging, lighting, audio, cameras, content playback and show operation.
